The ZKM combines all media and artistic genres. In thematic exhibitions, space-based arts such as painting, photography, and sculpture are shown. But above all time-based arts such as film, video, media art, music, dance, theater, and performance.

Founded in 1989, the ZKM pursues the goal of continuing the classical arts into the digital age. Hence the occasional designation as the “electronic or digital Bauhaus”. Presentation and production are expanded by the museum’s classical task of preserving works of art. Today, the ZKM is a unique cultural institution worldwide, a place of learning and research – for its artists, scientists and for you.

In addition to the presentation of art, the Center for Art and Media has taken on the task of creating conditions for the emergence of art. This is why the ZKM houses the Hertz Laboratory, where scientific research, development and production takes place.

The collection and archives include works and documents from the 20th and 21st centuries. By combining all artistic genres in one collection – from painting, sculpture, video art, performance and computer-based works to music – it is possible to gain a multifaceted perspective on art and history.

The special feature is the focus on the electronic arts. The collection of video art is one of the largest in Europe. The computer art collection is even the largest of its kind worldwide. Thus, since 1989, the ZKM has been setting worldwide standards in the development of interactive, participatory and performative exhibitions and the corresponding publications with international appeal. In thematic and monographic exhibitions, current developments in art and society are presented in all media forms and processes from oil painting to apps on an exhibition space of approximately 15,000 square meters.
