Karlsruhe: The Durlach district

The eastern district of Durlach is older than Karlsruhe itself. The medieval flair characterizes the old town of Durlach with its picturesque market place, the city wall, the castle square and the winding alleys and walls.

Old town of Karlsruhe

In 1196 Durlach was first mentioned in two documents by Emperor Heinrich VI. At the beginning of 1565 Durlach experienced an economic and cultural boom. However, Karlsruhe’s historic old town also experienced difficult times. Later, after the fire in the Thirty Years’ War and as a result of the War of Palatinate Succession, Margrave Friedrich Magnus began to rebuild the city.

In 1735 the mint was established in Durlach. In 1843 the railway line Karlsruhe-Heidelberg with station in Durlach opened. Due to its special position and after its incorporation into Karlsruhe, Durlach is still the only district of Karlsruhe with its own tax office and district court.

Concerts are regularly held at the Stadtkirche Durlach. From music at market time to the performance of great works. Durlach – the largest district of Karlsruhe

With almost 30,000 inhabitants, Durlach is the largest district of the city and is often called the mother of Karlsruhe. In the traffic-calmed medieval alleys of the old town centre you will love to lose yourself. The old city walls are clearly visible in the picturesque townscape. Parts of this wall are still preserved today.

Well-known sights are the town church, the Karlsburg, originally a Renaissance building, the market place and the town hall. With the Karlsruhe-Durlach motorway junction on the A5, the district is directly connected to the German motorway network. In addition, the tram and city railway line connects Durlach with the Karlsruhe city centre.
